Online copy length for maximum impact

I met up with our online copywriter, Stuart, in the week, who had read my last Monday Minute on Long v Short copy so he was ready for my questions on the best lengths for online copy.

He first drew my attention to the best length for blogs and we looked at my Monday Minutes to see where I have been going wrong. Here are his comments:

1.       Subjects need to be less than 50 characters and we usually manage that.

2.       An ideal Blog length is 1500 words.  This would take over 5 minutes to read so it would go against that blog title of “The Monday Minute” so I think I’ll pass on that.

3.       We also keep our Meta Description length (helps SEO) to under 150 so we have a clean bill of health there too.

All in all a satisfactory report, but he did suggest a way of extending the blog by only showing 300 words with a “Read More” link to the full copy.

Over the next few weeks I’ll share his thoughts on the ideal length of some social media posts.
