About once a week we have a client who asks about postcard mailings. There’s little doubt that they work in the States but you see so few of them in the UK.
Mail a postcard and your print costs are cut, there’s no envelope or enclosing costs either. However, your list and postage costs are the same and you get only to present 20% or so of your sales copy for the small savings. In the States, they get great postage rates for postcards and list rental rates are lower, so they can make it work.
Last week I was speaking to a newcomer to direct marketing. He had a product that looked good, had great margins and he had written a sales letter that wasn’t half bad for a first attempt.
He was keen to learn and asked how I thought the letter could be improved. He had a strong headline, a good story and plenty of testimonials. He couldn’t offer a free trial on the product and had no money back guarantee. I suggested this was a must, he agreed but when I saw his next draft I realised he hadn’t really understood how a money back guarantee works.
There are now machines that hold pens that “handwrite” personalised envelopes and notes. Of course, it’s possible to laser print “handwriting” on to envelopes etc but the finished look of the machine’s “handwriting” is very realistic.
